How to Connect Ledger Live with MetaMask?

Integrating your Ledger hardware wallet with MetaMask combines Ledger's top-tier security with MetaMask's versatile Web3 interface. This powerful combination allows you to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) while keeping your private keys offline and secure. Follow this step-by-step guide to set up the connection correctly.

Step 1: Prepare Your Ledger Live and Device

First, ensure your Ledger Live app is updated to the latest version from the official Ledger website. Then, connect your Ledger device, check that its firmware (OS) is up-to-date, and install the latest Ethereum (ETH) application on the device. Crucially, close Ledger Live after these steps, as it can conflict with MetaMask.

Step 2: Install MetaMask

Go to the official MetaMask website at https://metamask.io/ and install the browser extension for Chrome, Brave, or another compatible browser. Avoid Firefox temporarily, as it has known connectivity issues with Ledger. Create a new MetaMask wallet (do not import your Ledger recovery phrase here).

Step 3: Connect Your Ledger Device

Open the MetaMask extension and log in. Connect your Ledger device to your computer via USB and open the Ethereum app on the device. In MetaMask, click your account icon, go to "Add Wallet" or "Connect Hardware Wallet", and select Ledger.

Step 4: Select and Unlock Your Account

A pop-up will ask to connect to an HID device—select your Ledger and confirm. MetaMask will then display a list of your Ledger Ethereum accounts. Check the box next to the account(s) you wish to add and click "Unlock". Your Ledger accounts will now appear in MetaMask.

Step 5: Confirm and Use

Your Ledger-secured accounts are now ready to use within MetaMask. Remember, your private keys remain on the Ledger device—MetaMask only acts as a visual interface.
